How to Configure Router & Ios

Lab Name: CCNA RS
Understanding the Cisco ios naming convention, type of ios, and there feature.
Identify the IOS Version and Features of your Cisco device.
The show version command is the most popular way to obtain IOS identification information. This command displays information about the Cisco IOS Version and the Feature Set, as well as hardware information about your router. Cisco introduced a new naming convention to feature sets in 2006. This new naming convention was introduced in 12.3 and became the feature set naming standard. The most recent IOS versions are 15.x. In our labs, we use 15.4 IOS for routers.
The Image Name and Extension are Broken Down

IP Base is the base image. From this image it branches into IP Voice Advanced Security and Enterprise Base. IP Voice offers an upgrade to Service Provider Services. This includes SP Services Features, IP Voice Features, and IP Base features. Only “Advanced Images” contain Advanced Encryption Standard Cryptography (AES). The following categories summarize the new naming convention.

This naming convention is very similar the router IOS naming convention. Below is a feature tree for the new switch IOS name convention

IP Base: Previously known as Standard Multilayer Image, (SMI), the IP Base feature on Cisco Catalyst 3550 Series switches offers advanced quality of service, rate limiting and access control lists (ACL) along with basic static and RIP routing functionality.
IP Services: Previously known as Enhanced Multilayer Image on Cisco Catalyst 3355 Series Switches, this feature-rich set of enterprise-class routing functionality includes advanced hardware-based IP Unicast and IP Multicast routing, as well as policy based routing (PBR).
Advanced IP Services is not available in a pre-installed licence, but it is available as an upgrade. This feature set includes IPv6 routing support and IPv6 ACL.
Enterprise Services & Advanced Enterprise Services represent the best of the crop. These licenses are the most expensive and include all features of the platform. These licenses are not supported on modular switches such the Catalyst 4500 or 4900, 6500, and others.
You can check the version of the IOS running on the Cisco router.
